Tungsten carbide is a chemical compound containing tungsten and carbon atoms. it is extremely hard with a Vickers hardness of around 2600. Tungsten carbide is often used to make punches used in punching process. Punching means using a punch press to force a punch through the work piece to make a hole by shearing. Punching is applicable to a wide range of materials including sheet metal, paper, and some forms of plastic sheet. There are amount of clearance between the punch and the mold to avoiding the punch sticking in the mold. Clearance is dependent on thickness and hardness of workpiece. Thicker or harder materials need more clearance.
